How FASTag Works in India: Toll System Guide 2026

16 Mar, 26

Sudhir Kumar

When one has been driving along Indian highways in the past few years, chances are that he/she has glided through a toll station without even halting to offer cash. That's FASTag doing its job. However, a lot of drivers still remain confused about how exactly it works, whether it is compulsory, how to charge it, and what to do in case of malfunction.

This manual will contain all the information about FASTag in 2026.

What is FASTag?

FASTag is a tiny RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag, which is stuck on the windscreen of your car. It is associated with a prepaid wallet or bank account. As your car goes over a FASTag toll plaza, the toll will automatically be charged against your corresponding account – no stopping, no money, no line.

FASTag was launched by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to curtail the congestion at the toll plazas, enhance fuel efficiency on highways, and introduce transparency in the toll collection.

Is FASTag mandatory in India?

Yes. Since February 2021, FASTag has become mandatory for four-wheelers in India. No vehicles that lack a valid FASTag or vehicles that are travelling in a FASTag lane without a valid FASTag will be charged half the toll fee. The regulation concerns both personal and business cars.

How Does the FASTag System Work? Step by Step

  1. There is a FASTag sticker that is placed on the inside of the windscreen of the vehicle, immediately behind the rearview mirror.
  2. The sticker has an RFID chip which holds your vehicle information and has a prepaid account.
  3. Once you reach a FASTag toll lane, a toll booth overhead reader reads the RFID chip.
  4. The machine recognises your car, verifies the account balance and, within seconds, debits the due toll.
  5. A beep will confirm the deduction, and automatically the barrier will be opened.
  6. You are notified through an SMS on the registered mobile number of the transaction details.

The whole process is less than 5 seconds as compared to the 30-60 seconds in a cash lane.

How to Get a FASTag

It is easy to obtain a FASTag. You can get one from:

  • NHAI FASTag portals and Point of Sale (POS) points of toll plazas.
  • Authorised banks' exchangeable FASTags are issued by most significant banks in India, such as SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, Paytm Payments Bank, etc.
  • Online services like Paytm, Amazon online and Phonepe.
  • It is usually offered by vehicle dealers at the time of buying a new car.

Documents typically required:

  • Certificate of Vehicle Registration (RC).
  • Driver-size photograph of the vehicle owner.
  • KYC documents (Aadhaar card, PAN card, etc.)

The FASTag is attached to the wallet of the issuing bank or payment provider after issuance.

How to Recharge Your FASTag

The FASTag charges are easily made by:

  • Mobile banking app or net banking of your bank of issuance
  • UPI payments
  • Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, and similar payment applications.
  • NHAI's official My FASTag app

The recharge amounts and maximum wallet limits differ by issuer but usually range between a 100₹ minimum and a 100,000₹ maximum.

Before commencing a long highway journey, it will be prudent to maintain a balance amount of above ₹200-300 so as not to experience problems at toll plazas.

What happens if your FASTag balance is low or zero?

In case your FASTag balance has been too low by the time you pass a toll:

  • The completion will not be made, and the hindrance might not be removed.
  • At the toll you shall have to pay in cash, and in the majority of the cases the toll is doubled and turned into a penalty.
  • There are instances whereby the toll operators might refer you to a cash lane.

To prevent this, make it automatic and recharge using your bank to ensure that the wallet automatically recharges in cases where the balance becomes low, below a predefined limit.

FASTag and Vehicle Classes

Depending on the type of vehicle, the amount to be paid varies. FASTag operates with all the types of vehicles:

  • Class 4: Car, Jeep, Van (best-selling in terms of personal vehicles)
  • Class 5: Light Commercial Vehicles.
  • Class 6 and above: trucks, buses, and multi-axle vehicles.

Your FASTag RFID chip is unique to a particular type of vehicle, and therefore the appropriate toll rate is charged automatically.

How to Check Your FASTag Transaction History

All deductions at the toll can be checked by:

  • The application of your issuing bank or net banking portal.
  • The NHAI My FASTag app
  • You will receive an SMS notification after every transaction.

This provides a lot of ease in tracing the highway expenses, particularly when you travel a lot, be it for work or leisure.

Common FASTag Issues and How to Solve Them

Tag not read at the toll: Clean up the windscreen sticker. Make sure it is not covered with anything (such as a sun film or a sticker placed at the top of it). Contact your issuing bank in case the issue does not go away.

Incorrect deducted amount: File a complaint using the NHAI call centre (1033) or the customer care of your bank. The records on transactions are kept electronically.

FASTag blacklisted: This occurs when it is reported that the tag is lost or stolen or because of failed transactions. Get in touch with your bank to sort it out.

Lost or destroyed FAST AG: Have your bank immediately issue a new one because if not, there is a risk that someone could charge too many things to it and drain you.

FASTag on Rented and Self-Drive Cars

This is a worthy consideration among travellers who hire vehicles to get around the highway. When renting a self-drive car, the FASTag of the car is usually already operational and has been connected to the account of the rental company. Toll fees are either charged with the rental package or they are charged to you at the end of the trip; therefore, always make it clear with your rental company before you go out.

If you're planning a road trip on Indian highways and want the most hassle-free experience, RenTrip is a reliable option to consider for self-drive car rentals. Our vehicles come FASTag-ready, so you don't have to worry about toll arrangements on your journey. You simply drive, and the toll process takes care of itself.

FASTag in 2026: What's New

The FASTag ecosystem is still developing. The next generation of toll collection has been underway by the Government of India in the GNSS-based (GPS) tolling system, which will ultimately replace the existing barrier-based system. In this model, you will pay a toll depending on the distance you use on a highway and not the set charges at physical stations.

Although this system has yet to be piloted and implemented in stages, FASTag is the standard of any toll payments in 2026 and will probably be used at the time of transition.

Quick Tips for FASTag Users

  • Before driving on the highway, you should make sure to always ensure your FASTag wallet is well loaded.
  • Turn on SMS notifications in order to be informed about all deductions.
  • FASTag connects to a UPI-enabled account to make quick recharges on the go.
  • Provided that your vehicle has very tinted glass, you should inform your bank – certain tints are known to complicate the RFID scanning.
  • Do not take off your FASTag sticker without noticing the consequences of doing so, as it may destroy the chip.

Final Thoughts

FASTag has truly changed the experience of driving on Indian highways. The old aggravating wait at the toll plazas has been turned into a five-second pass-through. Knowledge on how it functions and how to keep it as well as what to take care of in case of trouble is much less stressful when travelling over highways.

Regardless of whether you are driving or rent a car to go on a trip, one of the easiest things to do to have a successful trip is to make sure that your FASTag is on and charged.
