Situated in Northern India, Uttar Pradesh is one of the most prominent Indian states. It is the most populated state in India.

It was set up in 1950 when India had become a Republic. Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh is famous for its culture and traditions. 

Rawal is the birthplace of Shri Radharani. Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Ayodhya is the birthplace of Lord Ram. Uttar Pradesh has significant importance for the mentioned Hindu Gods and mainly has temples dedicated to them.

Lucknow

 

 

The capital metropolis of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, is of great heritage importance. Some famous places include Lal Pul, Tilawali Masjid, Bara Imambara, Gol Darwaza, Chowk Bazaar, Phool Wali Gali and Akbari Darwaza. Lucknow is popular for its Nawabi Shaan. Here are some famous sites in Lucknow:

. Rumi Darwaza or Rumi Gate 

Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daula built Bara Imambara along with the Rumi Darwaza. This Darwaza has become the focus symbol of Lucknow. Situated on Hussainabad Road, Lajpat Nagar Colony, Rumi Darwaza is 60 feet high.

. Bara Imambara

It is the most famous heritage place in Lucknow. It was built by Nawab Asaf Ud Daula in 1784. The Imambara is also famous for its incredible maze called Bhul Bulaiya. The primary purpose of building it was to employ the people in the region.  

 

Prayagraj

 

 

Prayagraj also referred earlier to as Allahabad, is a major city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, often favoured for its three-river confluence with the name of Triveni Sangam (confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati). The city is the fattest developing metropolis of Uttar Pradesh state, and the state's high court with the name Allahabad High Court is also situated here. It is a holy place for Hindu pilgrimage and is of the highest importance for the followers and practitioners of the religion. 

. Muir College

It was set in 1872 by William Muir, a Lieutenant Governor of the northwest provinces who erected this impressive building to promote higher education in the region. In the year 1921, it got merged with Allahabad University and is now a central part of the university. This masterpiece is a mix of Persian, Egyptian and Indian styles of buildings and has minarets, which are some 61 meters high. 

. All Saints Cathedral 

All Saint's Cathedral is a church at the western end of civil lines. This church is made of stones called Patthar Girija or Church of Stones. The cathedral's design is in the Gothic style, which was the imagination of Sir Williams Emerson, famous for masterpieces such as the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata and Crawford market in Mumbai. 

 

Agra

 

 

Agra is one of the most attractive places to visit in UP. It is positioned on the banks of the river Yamuna. Here are some heritage places in Agra which are famous all around the globe.

. Taj Mahal  

This beauty of immense love is the resting place of Mumtaz Mahal, the chief wife of Emperor Shah Jahan. The emperor built the tomb to celebrate his and his wife's love story. It is constructed of white marble. Almost 20.000 labourers worked on this building to give it the finest shape as the one in front of us now.

Announced as a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO, the Taj Mahal is Agra's most favoured tourist destination. It is said that the place where the Taj Mahal was built was once a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva around the 12th century. The artisans who created this beautiful piece of architecture were ordered to cut off their hands by Shah Jahan to restrict them from creating any such building again. 

. Fatehpur Sikri

It is made of red sandstone and is situated around 40 kms from Agra. Mughal emperor Akbar built it in the 15th century. Also a part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, it was once home to expecting mother Jodha Bai, wife of the emperor Akbar, when she was about to deliver her firstborn child. It consists of the tomb of Sufi saint Salim Chisti, Jama Masjid, Jodha Bai's palace and Buland Darwaza.

. Agra Fort

Also known as Agra's Red Fort or Lal Qila, it was built by Hindu Rajput King Raja Badal Singh in 1475 AD. It is spread over 3,80,000 sq.m. and was placed in the list of world heritage sites by UNESCO in 1983. It has 70 feet high wall covering the outer of the fort. Its main attractions are Sheesh Mahal, Diwan-E-Khas, Diwan-E-Aam, Nagina Masjid and Moti Masjid.

 

Varanasi

 

 

Referred by Kashi or Banaras, Varanasi is located on the ghats of the holy river Ganga. This city is prominent in Hindu mythology for being settled down on earth by Lord Shiva and is also a main attraction for Shiva devotees.

The famous aarti of the river Ganga takes place here. For ages, it has been an ultimate pilgrimage spot. It is believed that if a person dies on the land of Varanasi, he attains salvation, or his soul gets free from the birth cycle. It has some heritage sites which are listed under UNESCO.

. Ancient Buddhist site Sarnath

It is situated in the city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. It is referred to by the names Isipatana or Mrigadava. Sarnath is a Buddhist pilgrimage site in India and was announced as a world heritage by UNESCO in 1988. The worth seeing places of this ancient pilgrimage is Dhamek Stupa, Ashoka Pillar, the Chaukhandi Stupa, the Archaeological Museum, Deer Park, Tibetan Temple, the Thai Monastery, the Chinese Temple and the Japanese Temple.

. The iconic riverfront of the Holy River Ganga

Varanasi is a pilgrimage destination famous for its river Ganga, the ghats, the renowned temples of Lord Shiva, the religious activities and the culture. It is considered to be the land of Lord Mahakaal, and the daily aarti processions of river Ganga are conducted at the riverfront on the ghats of Varanasi.

There are 84 ghats in Varanasi where spiritual processions like the immersion of the dead remains of humans, rituals related to the dead, festivities, celebrations, etc, takes place. It is the only Hindu pilgrimage where both celebration and cremation happen simultaneously. River Ganga is considered to be the most holy place in Varanasi.
